The Comprehensive Breast Care Center is an outpatient clinic in a medical office building adjacent to Hoag Hospital primarily focused upon women’s wellness and mammography. Women are traditionally the primary decision makers for their family’s healthcare needs and a mammography clinic is often the first experience a women may have with a medical center. Acknowledging this tendency, Hoag Hospital supported TAYLOR’s design of an upscale interior that would attract and retain patients from the Newport Beach area.
The interior design inspiration for this mammography suite is the adjacent Newport Harbor. The harbor, a unique environmental feature just outside the door, is not visible from this basement location. The interior architecture design and interior finishes employed by Ms. Mabus recalls the harbor through the use of lighting, color and texture. A serene setting was designed and achieved through the use of translucent glass, teak and steel screens. Steel frames contain translucent glass, recalling the masts of sailboats emerging through the morning fog. Indirect lighting was employed to reveal itself through spaces sliced into walls and ceilings, as the sun reveals itself through clouds. Upholstered benches are built-in, recalling the below deck seating of a sail boat. The detailing for waiting and dressing areas is inspired by the local environment.
In her role as designer and project architect Ms. Mabus was responsible for the conception, development and implementation of this award winning project while employed by TAYLOR.
